Incredible Women: 90′s Part Deux

(RIP) Aaliyah Are You That Somebody?  Remember when this song was all over the place?

One in a Million “Love it babe, love it babe, love it babe…”

Sarah McLachlan Building a Mystery “You’re so beautiful, a beautiful fucked up man…”

Sweet Surrender (The opening tune and chorus is perfect.)

Tori Amos God (The background vocal during “Why you always when the wind blows?” always gets me.)

Incredible Women: Some 90′s goodness from various women artists

I’ve been watching these videos over and over on youtube for the past week.  What is it about them that I like so much?  Is it the quiet sensuality of each song?  Or is it the strength?  All three of them approach love, relationships, and adultery in very strong ways.

Meredith Brooks What Would Happen

Toni Braxton You’re Makin’ Me High

Sheryl Crow My Favorite Mistake

I talked to Jennifer Batten via Blog Talk Radio!  She provides a lot of great insight of being a touring guitarist for Michael Jackson

I’m the caller at 1:31 and I call again at the end of the show.   Behind the cut are highlights  for those who can’t listen.

Tributes: I Heart….Grace Jones

I admit, I didn’t get truly interested in Grace until I saw Corporate Cannibal.  I’ve always known about her, but I’ve never gotten into her.  Now with her latest album, I’m a believer.  I love her, she’s so unapologetic about who she is.   She’s very worldly, has a very pleasant voice, thoughtful lyrics, and is very good at creating music.

I wish I could have a fraction of her coolness, and I will buy her latest album, “Hurricane”.

Tributes: I Heart….Wanda Sykes (NSFW)

I’ ve been watching her stand up ever since I was a teenager.  I first saw her on the first episode of Premium Blend when it was hosted by Jim Breuer.

“I just wish I could snatch his eyeballs out of his head, shove them up his butt and he’ll see how much of an ass he is,”

Tributes: I Heart….Li Jie

I love classical guitar, I hope to learn it one day, and this lady here is the gift that keeps on giving.

Album Review: Jennifer Batten’s Above, Below, and Beyond

I am finally writing a review of Jennifer Batten’s solo album.  It’s a great scorcher of an album with its variety of styles and is especially useful during long road trips.  While the theme of the album is instrumental, there are singers that Jennifer collaborates with on various tracks.  One downside to instrumental songs, is that it is hard to review them because I have a tendency not to listen so much as I lose myself to the songs.  In other words, it will be hard for me to be objective when reviewing this album.

A clip about the making of Above, Below, and Beyond.

Tributes: I Heart….Bessie Smith

I first learned of Bessie Smith as a teenager when I read that Janis Joplin bought a tombstone for her.  I got a CD of her work and I was blown away by her voice and it was such a stark contrast to the slick production values of 90′s music that I was so accustomed to.  Maybe it was the simple combination of horns, piano, and Bessie’s vocals that awoke something in me that I didn’t know was there.
